Tacoma, Washington and Fredericksburg, Virginia (2-9-18)–
Pacific Lutheran University, a Christian university in Tacoma, Washington has announced plans to host an event to encourage students to boast about their favorite abortion stories. The event, which is part of the Spring theatre season for the school is titled, “Out of Silence: Abortion Stories from the 1 in 3 Campaign presented by Pacific Lutheran University”. Created by the 1 in 3 Campaign, a project of Planned Parenthood-connected Advocates for Youth, the program “asks us to listen to the voices of women and to explore with them the situations, relationships, emotions and logistics that contextualize their decisions to seek abortion care. Composed of a series of vignettes Out of Silence is at times heartbreaking, funny, and even commonplace but always thought provoking and honest.”
Responding to the event, PLU Students for Life president Carly Stauffer said, “I am disappointed by the liberal culture that is rampant on my campus and showcased in events such as this. It saddens me that abortion is being represented as something that is problematic not because it is unjust, morally evil, and ultimately oppressive to women, but because it simply isn’t talked about enough. PLU’s middle name may be ‘Lutheran,’ but I sense the campus desires to divorce itself from traditional Christian values and pursue trendy social movements – like any typical American college campus.”
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America stated, “It utterly baffles me why a Christian university is sponsoring an event that promotes abortion. Christian universities should never celebrate abortions which are the destruction of human beings formed in God’s likeness. Instead, they should be promoting loving and life-affirming options for those in crisis, like we do through our Pregnant on Campus Initiative. This is just another example of the pseudo-theology employed by faux Christians to mask their ideological agenda that promotes discrimination, death, and destruction, completely in contradiction to the “good news” that Jesus Christ himself came here to deliver.”
