Each year, we take time at our national conferences to recognize our student group’s greatest achievements. This past year, we hit a huge milestone by reaching over 1,000 Students for Life groups on middle school, high school, college, med, and law campuses. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to spreading the pro-life message at your school and contributing to this nationwide cultural change. We are the most pro-life generation to date and you are the ones responsible for this amazing accomplishment.
Congratulations to our 2017 groups of the year!
Starting a new group at the high school level comes with its challenges, but this group started strong right out of the gate. The students at Huntingtown High School held SFLA training’s, attended local marches, prayed outside of abortion facilities, supported their local pregnancy resource center, and participated in some of the most influential activism events in our movement. This team of awesome students was part of a small group in the DC area that helped pray throughout the night at the Supreme Court before the Whole Women’s Health case was heard, and they helped pull off our #ProLifeGen Rally the day before the East Coast National Conference.
EAST COAST HIGH SCHOOL GROUP OF THE YEAR: S.A.L.T. LIFE AT BENET ACADEMY
Our Group of the Year for 2016 never ceases to amaze us at SFLA! This group participates in Prayer & Pancakes, where they go to pray at Planned Parenthood on a Saturday morning and then go to breakfast. They hosted a school-wide Pro-Life Assembly and multiple speakers, including their Regional Coordinator. Last October, S.A.L.T Life at Benet Academy did a Rosary for Life, sidewalk chalked, stood in the entry of their school with pro-life signs and chants as students were dropped off for school, and they also got super creative and hosted a fundraiser called “Nacho life to take.”
Five years ago, this group had seven members attend the March for Life, but this year they brought over 100 participants. Way to go!
EAST COAST NEW COLLEGE GROUP OF THE YEAR: BOBCATS FOR LIFE AT OHIO UNIVERSITY
This New Group of the Year wasted no time getting to work changing hearts and saving lives on their hostile campus this past semester. Bobcats for Life at Ohio University hosted a wide variety of events including baby item drives, SFLA training’s, protests, rallies, guest speakers, and campus displays. When met with hostility from their peers and campus faculty, this courageous group of pro-life heroes only increased their activism events. They also participated in several days of sidewalk counseling outreach and had the amazing opportunity to see TWO women turn away from the abortion facility because of their presence.
COLLEGE GROUP OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP: AVA MARIA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FOR LIFE
Ava Maria University’s Students for Life group accomplished so many great things in 2016. Just this past semester, this group organized bimonthly trips to the abortion facility, organized a pro-life gala with over one hundred students in attendance, and trained 15 of its students in sidewalk counseling with the help of Sidewalk Advocates for Life. They continue to shape the culture of life on college campuses and outside communities, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish is the semesters to come.
COLLEGE GROUP OF THE YEAR: UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA- LINCOLN STUDENTS FOR LIFE
The recipient of this award blew us away with all they accomplished last year. Students For Life at University of Nebraska-Lincoln started in 2015, and within the past couple of years they have continuously been courageous by standing up for LIFE on their campus and that certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. They’ve hosted a Cemetery of the Innocents display, held an overnight presence in front of Planned Parenthood, advertised for their on-campus pregnancy help center, and every semester they chalk their campus with pro-life messages in high traffic areas. This group is actively involved with the Pregnant on Campus Initiative as well. They started raising money for an endowment fund, and have already reached the halfway mark of their goal at $25,000.
IVY LEAGUE GROUP OF THE YEAR: PRINCETON UNIVERSITY
This group is an outstanding group of pro-life leaders that do not back down in the face of controversy. This year, Princeton University’s group hosted Ryan Bomberger for an event titled “Black is Beautiful” to address abortion and racial injustice. Being at an Ivy League school, this event received much scrutiny and critique, but they remained courageous and represented the pro-life position with grace and sophistication. Princeton Pro-Life hosted a Respect Life Week with many activities which included open dialogue with their peers on when human life begins.
PREGNANT ON CAMPUS GROUP OF THE YEAR: CLARION UNIVERSITY’S PREGNANCY AND PARENTING RESOURCES INITIATIVE (PPRI)
Clarion University’s PPRI brought together their community—students and administration—to create unique, effective solutions for the pregnant and parenting students. Thanks to their persistent efforts, this group hosted a Feminists for Life Resources Forum, worked with the university to create
school webpage and Facebook page for all available resources, and published a diaper changing station map. Additionally, PPRI started a babysitting share, hosted family friendly parties for students and their children, and established lactation rooms with diaper changing stations on the main and branch campuses of their University.
We are proud to award this 2017 Pregnant on Campus Group of the Year Award to Clarion University’s Pregnancy and Parenting Resources Initiative!
CHAPTER OF THE YEAR: LEHIGH VALLEY PRO-LIFE FUTURE
Pro-Life Future, the young adult network initiative of Students for Life of America, is just beginning to blossom. In two years, it has taken off like the marchers at the March for Life! Much like Pro-Life Future, our chapter of the year is young – but it has led the way with establishing itself and becoming active in the community.
From being introduced on the Pennsylvania State House floor and working with their local representatives to promote pro-life legislation, this chapter has taken a leading role in promoting life in their state government. Not to mention, this chapter also operated a house for a canvassing drive to earn support for a late-term abortion ban in the making. This is what makes the Lehigh Valley Pro-Life Future chapter our Chapter of the Year and a true forerunner for pro-life legislation in their state.
WEST COAST NEW GROUP OF THE YEAR: WHATCOM COLLEGE STUDENTS FOR LIFE
Despite their infancy, Whatcom College’s Students for Life group hit the ground running with the pro-life message this year! This group completed a training marathon, in addition to volunteering at their local PRC during break and a banquet, then recruited members to join by clip-boarding. By operating a baby clothes drive, Whatcom College’s SFL met the needs of young mothers in their community. Then, the group hosted Hollywood-face Jason Jones to speak about the pro-life message in the movie industry, held a movie screening, and a Halloween recruitment table to spread the word about the pro-life movement on their campus.
WEST COAST GROUP OF THE YEAR: STUDENTS FOR LIFE AT COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY
Since this award recognizes the overall success and efforts of one Students for Life group who has done a phenomenal job leading the charge for life at their school, it only seems right to give this award to Students for Life at Colorado State University as our college group of the year! In addition to holding 8 tabling events on their campus in the fall semester alone, they hosted the SFLA “We don’t need PP” display, hosted National speakers like Josh Brahm and Dr. Alveda King, and so much more!
This group reached out to numerous pregnant, parenting, and post-abortive students throughout the year in addition to countering the pro-Planned Parenthood message on their campus. Through their 3-day campus event with Justice for All, they reached over 35,000 students!
PREGNANT ON CAMPUS GROUP OF THE YEAR: STUDENTS FOR LIFE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO
This year’s winner has persisted and thrived in its efforts to bring life-affirming, empowering options and resources to women at their University. They worked tirelessly to create a culture of life on their campus through various events and community engagements. Over the past year, their efforts on and off campus have helped save at least TWELVE babies in their community! By being heroic, this group has passed five student government resolutions to include: diaper changing stations, mom-to-be parking spaces, parental leave for new student parents, “family friendly” student study lounge, and equal access to options. This group is truly amazing!
