The student government of the ultra-liberal University of California-Berkeley has decided that abortion is ‘necessary and relevant’ for the lives of students and that it should be offered on their college campus. True story.
Besides the fact that this is inherently demeaning of pregnant and parenting students and the opposite of empowerment of women, the intrepid student government wants abortion offered to students for free.
Who is going to pay for it? The student government wants the professors, whose main job is education, to take a pay cut.
Aanchal Chugh is the primary sponsor of the bill and she explained her logic (or lack thereof) to Campus Reform:
“I believe the University should reorganize funds from the administration’s paychecks to university health services. Many of the administrators at UC Berkeley receive more than generous paychecks while they continue to put student health on the backburner,” Chugh said. “This resolution is demanding that the university reconsider and reprioritize its funding. Instead of investing money into the administration’s paychecks, the university should be investing in students’ health and safety needs.”
So basically she wants educators to put abortion over education. This story would be laughable if it wasn’t true. The bill is now going to be put in front of administrators at Berkeley.
The Students for Life club at Berkeley was rightly horrified by this bill, especially since they promote tangible resources for pregnant and parenting students through the Pregnant on Campus program. This is what they had to say:
“The student government at Berkeley exemplifies the lack of support and empowerment of women that is rampant throughout the abortion rights movement. Abortion is degrading to women, and the bill expresses a mentality that a woman’s ability to bear children is a crisis rather than an empowering act and a great contribution to society. That is not only dangerous and hurtful, but it stigmatizes pregnant and parenting students on campus.
“This is exactly the kind of callous attitude that forces students to choose between their child and their education, which no student should have to do. The Students for Life club at Berkeley is dedicated to not only educating their peers on the atrocity of abortion but also offering tangible resources for pregnant and parenting students. We are willing and ready to support these students facing unplanned pregnancies so that they aren’t forced to choose between their child and their education.
“As for the ASUC resolution, it deserves no further consideration. Education is the primary function of professors, not to pay for abortion. To suggest that they take a pay cut to fund student abortions is absurd.”
