With Halloween fast approaching I was thinking about scary moments in my life – not the kind from the costume shop or a local haunted house where you know that the scary isn’t real but rather the kind of scary that wrenches your heart, defies logic, and never leaves you.
This moment for me was when I came face to face with Kermit Gosnell and got a glimpse into his House of Horrors.
It was the last day of Gosnell’s trial in Pennsylvania and I was standing at the partition behind the counsel’s tables where Kermit Gosnell’s abortion facility had been recreated for the jury – the court would not allow the jury to go and visit his clinic, so the prosecution took the contents of one of his exam/surgery rooms and set it up on the floor in front of the jury. Most of it had been disassembled but the exam table and the recliner from the recovery room remained on the floor.
The horror of what had happened on that exam table hit me hard – the thousands of children whose lives had been brutally ended right there, without concern or hesitation from Gosnell or his staff. I continued to look at these two pieces of furniture; they were ripped, dirty, and blood stained and I thought, “What kind of monster would you have to be to put a woman on a blood stained exam table and tell her that this is help?”
Gosnell operated in an impoverished part of town, selling his services to many, many women, many of whom who were demoralized and vulnerable. He was not helping them exercise their “choice” or “reproductive rights”: he was giving them what he believed they deserved…a dirty and unsanitary place to get rid of their problem and then get out the door. As Gosnell’s defense attorney argued, he provided desperate young girls with what he thought was “relief, a solution to their problem.”
We know that abortion is not a solution, it is only a temporary fix that masks the real problems a woman is facing. Gosnell did not care about these women, he only cared about making a quick buck. And never does helping women include keeping the feet of their dead children as trophies, or refrigerating their baby’s bodies and putting them next to his lunch for the day, or turning an abortion procedure into a live birth and then cutting the born and living child’s spine.
Gosnell’s House of Horrors is nothing new. Operation Rescue has been investigating and exposing other clinics across the country for years. Clinics with ceiling tiles that are missing or falling apart, wiring that is exposed, dirty exam tables, garbage piled up, baby body parts in the refrigerator next to the staff lunches, and more. Operation Rescue has done an excellent job of documenting how Gosnell’s facility is just business as usual for the abortion industry.
More recently there have been three abortionists arrested for taking the House of Horrors to a whole new level by performing private abortions out of the trunks of their cars. Michael Roth in Michigan was arrested this month for doing abortions either out of his home or in the private homes of his customers. When police raided his home they found what they believe are 14 containers that possibly contain the bodies of aborted babies along with other human tissue.
In South Carolina, police found a mobile abortion clinic with blood and tissue covered tools during a four-hour traffic bust. An unlicensed abortionist and his wife ran the mobile abortion bus and apparently traveled around the state to perform illegal abortions.
And then in Las Vegas, Rick Van Thiel, who watched YouTube videos to learn how to perform abortions and then used Craigslist to find patients, was arrested for illegally performing abortions and other medically related charges.
Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby want to distract us from the reality of the House of Horrors with the glittery promise of birth control, breast exams, and well woman visits. However, even Planned Parenthood – the supposed national gold standard of abortion services – has been secretly operating their own House of Horrors, which was exposed in Texas in 2014 when they closed several of their clinics instead of bringing them up to the established safety standards of all other medical clinics.
For instance, in San Antonio, an annual inspection report showed that the Planned Parenthood facility had serious sterilization issues. Included in the inspection was the fact that they weren’t separating clean and dirty instruments and they weren’t testing their autoclave machine to ensure that it was still working. There was also an abortion clinic in Beaumont facing similar issues being cited for untrained staff, dirty equipment, expired medications given to patients, and more.
There is something wrong in our nation when a woman willingly accepts these conditions as her best option for help in her crisis – and when a multi-million dollar organization like Planned Parenthood fights to keep these low standards in place and summarily protects the Kermit Gosnells of the world.
If you really want to experience something scary this Halloween, something that will tear at your heart, leave you in disbelief, and haunt you all your days, you don’t have to go further than the abortion industry. And if you want to open people’s eyes to the scary reality of abortion I suggest you watch or host a screening of 3801 Lancaster – American Tragedy.
