Great news today! The West Virginia legislature overrode Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin’s veto earlier in the week of a bill that would have banned abortion after 20 weeks. Both the West Virginia House of Delegates and Senate overwhelmingly voted in favor of this bill, which takes effect in 90 days.
Regarding the historic vote, Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, said:
“West Virginians should be so proud of their elected officials for overriding Governor Tomblin’s veto of the bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks, when babies have been scientifically able to feel pain. Thanks to leaders like Speaker Tim Armstead and others who have no fear of standing up for the voiceless and having the courage to do everything in their power to make sure this bill passes, innocent little babies will no longer face horrific and gruesome abortions. I hope that other states, and ultimately the federal government, follow West Virginia’s lead and ban abortions after 20 weeks, which is overwhelmingly supported by Americans. To do anything less is cowardly.”
