We are pleased to announce the 2014 West Coast Conference Awards!
West Coast New Group of the Year
Congratulations to our West Coast New Group of the Year, Students for Life at the University of New Mexico! This group has shown an incredible dedication to making their campus a center of the pro-life movement in new Mexico. After just one semester they were able to bring life affirming resources to pregnant, parenting and post abortive students on campus and in their communities by partnering with local pregnancy resource centers, working with post abortive counselors. They recognize that consistency is a key to success and that is why they table for the Pregnant on Campus initiative for four hours every Friday to let their campus know they are there to help. They have challenged the school’s women’s resource center for having a biased voice on campus and have pushed them to offer adequate resources so that students never have to choose between becoming a parent or continuing their education and called out their schools president to hold them accountable. This past fall they were the foundation for the strike force in Albuquerque which was the grassroots movement to end late term abortion. (something about us being there) They are currently investigating the University to find out how much tuition is being allocated to funding abortions vs. Pregnant and parenting resources. They are committed to making their campus pro-life through education and have put organized a 5k run for Life, a Diaper Drive, sidewalk counseled consistently, testified at town hall meetings, hosted the Planned Parenthood Project, and helped organize the official March for Life in Santa Fe among many other events. There is no stopping this team of fearless pro-lifers.
West Coast Pregnant on Campus Group of the Year
The Pregnant on Campus award goes to Every Life Matters at Concordia University in Irvine. This group has done an exceptional job in their first semester on campus at hosting a presence for life and supporting the community around them. After becoming official in October the group hosted the local 40 Days for Life campaign and on their first day had a woman leave the clinic and save her child’s life! At Christmas the group made care packages for each of the young expectant mothers living at Mary’s Shelter, a safe place for young women who want to keep their child and need support. The group also regularly helps out and supports the local Pregnancy Resource Center, Birth Choice. This group has done a wonderful job and is not ready to stop any time soon. They are creating the resources and signs of hope to change the culture on their campus so that one day, no student will feel that she can’t stay in school and have her child.
West Coast group of the Year
For their faithfulness and determination, SFLA is proud to announce that this year’s West Coast Group of the Year is Gonzaga University Students for Life. This year’s award goes to a truly remarkable group who has made persistent strides changing hearts, changing minds, saving lives and building a culture of life on their campus and in their community. This past spring, and this past fall, the students hosted a life week on their campus, including hosting pro-life speakers Sister Helen Prejean and Victoria Thorpe, chalking a heart cemetery of the innocents, giving a face to the pro-life movement on campus by hosting photo-booth, pro-life cupcakes, and hosting pro-life mass. They have also joined their local 40 Days for Life campaign to bring out club members to pray regularly. In September they ran a Hygiene and Diaper Drive to help women and children in need. This group was one of the first to bring the Planned Parenthood Project to their campus. They courageously engaged in dialogue and changed several students’ minds on Planned Parenthood and abortion. After attending last year’s 2013 National Conference and March for Life, this group determined to get even more of their members to the West Coast walk and diligently hosted a series of fundraisers to get 11 students to the Walk for Life and West Coast SFLA Conference.
