On Wednesday, January 15, 2014, the United States Supreme Court will be hearing McCullen v. Coakley, a pivotal case addressing the constitutionality of “buffer zones” around abortion facilities in Massachusetts. The case centers on one seemingly simple marker -A yellow line.
Massachusetts recently passed a law which criminalizes sidewalk counseling and prohibits pro-life supporters from standing on public sidewalks if they are within 35 feet of the entrance, exit, or driveway of the abortion facility, marked by a yellow line. Massachusetts has made consensual conservations on public sidewalks, illegal. The law is intended to keep pro-life advocates from engaging abortion-minded women as they enter the facility and is threatening to eliminate a pregnant woman’s last chance to hear of hope.
With almost 800 pro-life student groups around the nation, Students for Life works with hundreds of students who participate in peaceful sidewalk counseling and prayer vigils outside of their local abortion facilities. The public sidewalk is in danger of becoming off-limits to these American citizens. The Supreme Court needs to strike down this unconstitutional law and allow individuals to reach out to women in need. Massachusetts is setting a dangerous precedent that could potentially affect our young people’s ability to practice their first amendment rights and offer real counseling to women.
When interviewed about this case, Martha Walz, President of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, stated that “The only thing that’s before the court is the last seven seconds of a patient’s or a staff member’s walk to the door.” … This could not be further from the truth. What is before the court is more than 35 ft. It is an invisible wall that protects the mighty fortress of death that is Planned Parenthood. It is a barrier against truth. It is a barrier that traps women into a decision that they may feel coerced into making. It is the final 7 seconds for a young woman to change her mind and save the innocent life of her child.
7 seconds – that is all we ask for. If Planned Parenthood and their pro-abortion friends can’t give us 7 seconds, then they are even more bloodthirsty that we give them credit for.
Sidewalk Counseling is not harassment, as the abortion industry wants you to believe. Studies have shown that women have abortions because they feel like they have no other option. Sidewalk Counselors offer the other options, options that don’t leave a child dead and a woman physically and emotionally wounded. Sidewalk counselors provide information and support when women are in this emotional and desperate time. We know that faithful men and women all over the nation, stand outside, sometimes even in the freezing cold or pouring rain, as the last line of defense for these women. We know that once these women walk through the doors of the abortion facility, abortion is the only option that they will hear.
We know that Planned Parenthood pushes abortion and does not offer real “options counseling.” Planned Parenthood commits 145 abortions for 1 adoption referral. Planned Parenthood must meet their abortion quotas, and women in need are their means! By cashing in on desperate women, Planned Parenthood made over 150 million dollars last year from abortion alone. Abortion equals money and Planned Parenthood, their political cronies, and every mom and pop chop shop around the nation don’t want our faithful life advocates taking from their bottom line. Is that choice? Is that healthcare? Cash or credit exchanged for the life of a child? The buffer zones do not protect women, they protect the abortion business.
If this law is upheld by the Supreme Court, we are reinforcing that our country does not actually care for women. They do not want women to make informed decisions about their health and about their families. We cannot sit here and do nothing while the abortion industry continues to exploit women and lie to them about the precious life being carried inside of them. We cannot allow women to be continually deceived by organizations like Planned Parenthood, who target vulnerable women and profit off of the death of innocent human beings.
If the abortion industry really cared for women and believed in the “right to choose”, why are they so afraid of the other options? Why do they feel like they have to shut us up so that women will choose abortion. That’s not much of a “choice.”
Sidewalk advocates are present at abortion facilities around the country in an effort to protect women and to save lives. Outside of the very Planned Parenthood that is pushing this law, faithful, loving people have helped save 58 children from death. We do not harass; we do not push. We love. We offer better options. Options that do NOT leave a child dead. We offer support, resources, and the truth… We offer Life. Stand with us, and with the Pro-Life generation, who are fighting against discrimination and asking the Supreme Court to remember the women in need. Women need support and resources… not abortion.
