Medical Students for Life (Med SFLA), an outreach of Students for Life of America, is launching the second half of its national Bioethics Symposium and Tour this week beginning with a private gathering with University Minnesota medical students and a presentation at Minnesota’s Mayo Medical School on March 16th from 12-1pm, at Saint John’s: 1 4th Avenue Southwest Rochester, MN, just down the street from Mayo Medical School. All media are welcome.
The first half of the tour swept across the southeast United States and stopped eleven times to host symposiums at numerous medical schools and universities, and coincided with the February 18th actions by the Obama Administration to gut the only federal regulation protecting the conscience rights of medical professionals.
The Bush Administration’s conscience rights protections shielded health care professionals from being forced to prescribe abortion-causing drugs, ella and Plan B, that the FDA has mislabeled as mere contraception. The recent move nearly rescinded most protections and opened Pandora’s Box to legally forcing physicians, nurses and others in the medical community to check their moral and ethical compasses at the door.
Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life of America and Medical Students for Life, noted:
“In a medical field that is broken and with the future of our new healthcare system uncertain, this issue of conscience protections is especially critical for healthcare delivery to Americans–by reducing conscience rights, we reduce healthcare access by slashing the numbers of life-respecting medical professionals who no longer in many cases have the legal right to opt out of procedures deemed unethical by their well-formed consciences.”
“The Bioethics Symposium and Tour is critical for the future of the country. These students are targeted not only by pro-abortion administrators, but also from the federal government now. Pro-life medical students need the support and training necessary to promote and protect all human life as future medical professionals.”
