Ways to Give to Students for Life

As we expand our Major Gifts & Planned Giving Program, we invite donors to consider new ways to deepen their investment in Students for Life of America, partnering with us as we work to abolish abortion in our nation. Because prudent financial, tax and giving strategy depends on your personal circumstances and goals, our development office is happy to meet with you and your professional advisors to visit about your situation and offer options for turning your gift into a meaningful legacy.

Charitable Bequest

Gifts made through wills or trusts have become the foundation of the American philanthropic tradition. In fact, the overwhelming majority of planned gifts are the result of bequests, so-called “legacy” gifts. If you’ve thought about making a gift to Students for Life of America but aren’t ready to relinquish your assets today, consider leaving a legacy gift. A bequest is made by a simple provision in your will or trust, and may enable you to make significant contributions not otherwise possible during your lifetime.

Securities

By making a gift of your appreciated securities, you may avoid paying capital gains tax that would otherwise be due if you sold these assets, and also receive a charitable income tax deduction. Because they receive favorable capital gains treatment, securities often provide greater tax benefits than a cash gift of equivalent value, particularly if they have a low cost basis.

Life Insurance Policies

Most of us think of life insurance as protection, particularly for our loved ones. But life insurance is also a powerful tool you can use to champion our work far into the future. By naming Students for Life of America as beneficiary of your life insurance policy, you may create a charitable legacy without invading cash and other assets designated for your heirs.

Retirement Account Assets

If you die with retirement plan assets in your estate, those assets are subject to income taxes which may dramatically reduce the amount that would otherwise pass to your beneficiaries. Instead, consider a beneficiary designation naming Students for Life of America to receive these assets. Because we are a nonprofit organization, Students for Life of America is not taxed upon receiving retirement plan assets, allowing us to use their full value to further our important work.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract between a donor and a charity. A donor transfers cash, securities, or other assets to the charity in exchange for a commitment by the charity to pay the donor (and a second annuitant, if the donor chooses) a fixed payment for the remainder of his or her lifetime(s). On the death of the donor and any second annuitant, the remaining principal is retained by the charity to carry out the donor’s charitable legacy. Working in partnership with the National Christian Foundation, you may support Students for Life of America and make a charitable gift now, qualify for immediate tax benefits, and ensure an income stream for life.

Charitable Trusts

Under the right set of circumstances, a charitable trust may enhance your income, minimize taxes, unlock appreciated investments, rid you of investment worries and ultimately provide Students for Life of America with a significant charitable gift. Although trusts are complex legal instruments that require particularly careful consideration, many donors enjoy optimal estate planning by establishing a trust.

Real Estate

If the timing isn’t right for a large cash gift but you’d still like to make a significant contribution to Students for Life of America, your real property can open the door to a unique giving opportunity. By using appreciated real estate to make a charitable contribution, you may avoid paying capital gains tax at sale and also receive a charitable income tax deduction. Donate a home, vacation property, vacant land, farmland, ranch or commercial property outright, place it in trust, or leave it to Students for Life of America in your Will, creating a lasting legacy.

Tangible Personal Property

Many items of personal property including automobiles, boats, airplanes, artwork, furniture, equipment, and jewelry can make viable charitable gifts. The tax advantages of donating personal property, however, depend on whether or not the property can be used in connection with Students for Life of America’s tax-exempt purpose. We are delighted to discuss the nuances of any specific items you would like to donate.
