Throughout their marriage Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have been great defenders for life, both privately and publically. Early in their marriage the Duggars embraced the gift of life and opened their hearts to the family that God would give them. Embarking on a unique journey that has led to the abundant blessings of 19 children and 3 grandchildren; the Duggars personal life witness has been one that has challenged those around them to understand and accept the gift of life in their own marriages.
The Duggars’ love for children does not end with their own children and grandchildren. They have also worked passionately to support the rights of the pre-born in America. After participating in a pro-life rally in front of the Arkansas state capitol, Jim Bob was inspired to run for a public office and was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives, where he served from 1999–2003.
After taking their defense of life to the state level, the Duggars courageously opened up their home in 2008 as a witness to the nation through the TLC program “19 Kids and Counting.” Where they boldly shared their commitment to accept, love, and provide for all the children God was willing to gift them with. In a culture that embraces a mantra of casual sex, wanted children, and abortion on demand for any reason, the Duggars graciously showed the nation that you can have a healthy marriage and embrace the gift of life – as many times as you are given!
This past year, Jim Bob and Michelle have been actively working in Tennessee supporting and advocating for Amendment 1, a provision which would create life-saving restrictions on abortion in the state. Tennessee’s Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the state’s constitution did not allow for lawmakers to restrict access to abortions, making Tennessee the state with the most liberal abortion laws in the nation. “We must join together and end the baby holocaust that is taking place right here in Tennessee,” Michelle has passionately stated while working in the state.
It is for their exceptional work and personal courage to embrace the gift of life that Students for Life of America is proud to honor Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar as our 2013 Defender of Life Award Recipients at SFLA’s 2014 National Conference on January 21st.
Tuesday, January 21,2014 will mark the 27th annual Students for Life of America National Conference. The conference will be hosted in Upper Marlboro, MD at First Baptist Church of Glenarden; one of Prince Georges County’s largest African-American churches. For the past 3 years, the SFLA conference has sold out with 2,000 in attendance, making the event the largest pro-life conference in the nation. Students come from all across the country to be trained and equipped by the top pro-life leaders in their fields — with presentations in apologetics, bioethics, and activism — these students then go back home where they are the defenders of life on their campus and in their communities.
This year, 40 Days for Life will host an Adult Leadership Summit during the SFLA National Conference. Adults have always been welcome to attend the conference and have attended in the past, but, this year, there will be specific training geared to pro-life adults.
