FREDERICKSBURG, VA (09-28-17) – Following news that Governor Bruce Rauner broke his promise to Illinois voters by announcing he would sign HB 40, creating a new income stream for the abortion industry, Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins made the following statement: “Students for Life of America is gravely disappointed in Governor Rauner for signing HB 40 today, violating his promise to protect Illinois taxpayers from forced funding of abortion. This bill, which provides taxpayer money to the abortion industry, flies directly in the face of the vast majority of Americans who don’t support taxpayer funding for abortion, and this holds true whether people self-identify as pro-life and pro-choice.
“This abhorrent bill has nothing to do with protecting women’s health and is about nothing more than providing a new income stream for the abortion lobby. Unfortunately, Governor Rauner gave into the pressure of the abortion industry, which has moved from choice to coercion, forcing people to not only support their extreme abortion agenda, but also to pay for it. The people of Illinois need to hold their office holders accountable for taking scarce tax monies and creating a new category of taxpayer-funded abortion. As part of a nationwide campaign to mobilize and activate the next generation of pro-life voters and advocates, Students for Life of America is traveling to more than 90 campuses nationwide this fall, holding events on more than 90 college campuses, explaining the grim reality that Governor Rauner must not understand, abortion = violence.
