Students for Life Clinches Impressive Numbers during the Fall 2011 Semester

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

In just the fall 2011 semester alone, our team at Students for Life of America has managed to make a significant dent in pro-abortion culture on campuses across the nation – and we have the numbers to prove it.

In just four short months, our Field Team, along with members of our Pregnant on Campus Initiative and Medical Students for Life division, have traveled from coast to coast, organizing, building, and revitalizing student groups to nourish pro-life culture among college-aged students and to provide necessary resources, trainings and workshops to foster a supportive environment for pro-lifers.

Students for Life ended the Fall semester with a total tally of 678 active student groups that work with us, including 52 new groups we have helped start. We currently serve groups in 49 states and equipped pro-life students with leadership skills at 42 trainings in 16 states last fall.

In addition, our team visited 118 campuses in 21 states last semester, and our Medical Students for Life division founded 3 new campus groups to round out our total of 27 Med SFL groups in 17 states.

Our Pregnant on Campus Initiative that begun in July of 2011 was revitalized after the death of our dear friend and former PonC Coordinator, Jon Scharfenberger, and we were able to successfully welcome 19 pro-life campus groups into the initiative. We were also successful in establishing 28 high school and homeschool pro-life student groups last fall.

We look forward to continuing our successful efforts in the latter half of the academic year and working to abolishing abortion with this generation!

SFLA Planned Parenthood Event Protest at VCU – Sept. 14, 2011

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

On September 14th, Virginia Coalition to Protect Women’s Health held an event at The Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA to speak out against the VA Board of Health’s proposed regulations for Virginia’s abortion clinics. This event fell before the September 15th vote to accept or reject regulations that would hold facilities that perform abortions in the state to specific safety standards.

In order to counter their event with the message of life, Students for Life of America organized a pro-life flash mob. We garnered the support of about 50 pro-lifers from various statewide organizations, including Virginia Coalition for Life and Life, Inc. – as well as on-campus support from VCU Students for Life and VCU CCM.

See what happened when we came face-to-face with pro-abortionists, Planned Parenthood representatives, and students on both sides of the issue!

New Article on SFLA: The rise of future anti-abortion-rights OB-GYNs

In April, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a bill that makes it illegal for state colleges to fund medical residency programs that offer abortion training with state or federal money, including money paid by students as part of tuition or fees.

But what began as a rare seed in a nationwide garden of abortion-defunding measures has blossomed into a national movement to reduce the number of medical professionals who are trained to provide abortions. Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure that would ban health centers from using federal funds for comprehensive medical training that includes instruction of abortion procedures. Obama’s Grave Assault on Medical Conscience Rights

Friday, May 27th, 2011

By: Kristan Hawkins

During the past two years, Americans have seen the expansion of the federal government into sectors of their economy and personal life as never before.  And earlier this year, the Obama administration quietly moved into a new area of American life, one of its most intimate, the patient-doctor relationship.

Like the Obama takeovers of the automobile industry, the banking industry and then the health care industry, the new conscience-rights assault is the administration’s latest attempt to fundamentally change our nation as we know it.

In February, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the rescission of most of the Bush administration’s 2008 conscience protections, removing the rights of doctors, pharmacists and other medical professionals to object to prescribing or dispensing known abortifacient drugs such as Plan B and ella. SFLA and Cardinal Newman Society Send Letter to President of Villanova University

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Arlington, VA- Students for Life and the Cardinal Newman Society sent a letter to Father Peter Donohue, President of Villanova University, asking him to reconsider the University’s decision to host and honor Senator Bob Casey because of his public opposition to Church teaching and his pro-abortion record in the U.S. Senate.

As announced yesterday, Villanova University will be hosting and honoring Senator Bob Casey at the 2011 Commencement Ceremony this Sunday. Senator Casey has a record of supporting pro-abortion legislation such as Obamacare and federal funding of international pro-abortion organizations, while also voting to place Justice Kagan on the Supreme Court. SFLA Launches Petition Asking Villanova University to Rescind Honor for Pro-Abortion Senator Casey

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Arlington, VA- Students for Life of America launched a petition today asking Villanova University, an Augustinian university*, not to host or honor Senator Bob Casey at their upcoming 2011 Commencement exercises.

The petition can be viewed here: http://www.abolishabortion.com/petition_detail.php?petition_id=100.

Villanova University will be honoring Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey with the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa and have asked him to deliver the Commencement Address for the Class of 2011.

Upon releasing the petition, Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life of America commented, “A Catholic university should not be honoring a man who has not only voted for pro-abortion Obamacare and to increase taxpayer spending on abortions overseas, but also voted to place Elena Kagan, one of the most radical, pro-abortion justices , on the Supreme Court for life. When a Catholic institution honors and hosts an individual who publicly (more…)

Breaking Update on UB Vandalism

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

This is an update on the previous release on the vandalized Cemetery of the Innocents Display at University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

Between 1pm yesterday, May9th, and 1:30pm today, 300 of the 330 crosses were stolen from the UBSFL Cemetery of the Innocents Display. The only remaining crosses are those spelling “Love All” from the previous vandalism last week. The UB SFL group notified SFLA of the missing $700 display this afternoon. The group has also notified campus police and evidence has been added to the current investigation.

The group will be hosting a pro-life vigil tonight at the scene of the vandalism at 9pm on UB’s campus at Baird Point. All media are welcome.

HHS responds to Pro-Life Letter, Defends Conscience Rescission

Arlington, VA- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has officially responded to pro-life concerns over the recent conscience rescissions for medical students and medical professionals. The response comes after Students for Life of America, Medical Students for Life of America, Christian Medical Association, Catholic Medical Association, and the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists sent a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius expressing concerns over the Obama administration’s latest attempt to discriminate against medical professionals of faith and conscience.

View the original letter sent to HHS here and view the response letter from HHS here.

Upon receipt of Health and Human Services’ response, Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life of America commented, “While the Obama administration may not define life as beginning at fertilization, many Americans and medical professionals do. Conscience rights should be extended to health care providers who refuse to participate in actions which terminate the life of a human being after fertilization. The current U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regulations are inadequate to protect those rights of conscience as abortionifacent drugs like ella and Plan B are falling through the administration’s loophole.”

Second Round of Discrimination for SUNY University at Buffalo Students for Life

Cemetery of the Innocents Display Vandalized, Investigation Underway

Arlington, VA- Last week, the SUNY University at Buffalo Students for Life (UBSFL) group faced more discrimination on campus as pro-abortion vandals attacked their Cemetery of the Innocents Display 3 times. This comes as the group was granted preliminary club status last month after waiting 10 months for approval.

“The discrimination that the UB Students for Life group has faced on campus is outrageous, “ commented Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life. “This vandalism is a clear violation of the students’ freedom of speech, and Students for Life of America is awaiting a comment from the President of the University following the investigation on campus. We hope that the comment will send a strong signal that UB does not allow discrimination on campus and that this type of unlawful behavior is acceptable.”

Last Thursday, pro-abortion vandals destroyed the pro-life display 3 times. The first time, the vandals pulled up the display and wrote the word “Pro-Choice” with the crosses. After the group put the display up again, the vandals came back a few hours later, re-pulled up all of the crosses, and wrote “Love All”. The UB Students for Life group thought this was a fitting addition to the Cemetery since people should love all, including preborn children. The group left the words and re-set up the rest of the crosses in the display. The next morning the group found the crosses pulled up yet again with the words “LOL Babies” written with the crosses. Each time the pro-life display was vandalized, UB Students for Life notified the UB Police Department.

SFLA has learned that the University at Buffalo President, Satish Tripathi, will not make a public condemnation of the vandalism until his office receives the results of campus police investigation.  Last Friday, the President of the Students for Life group called the UB President’s office to see if he would make a statement condemning the attacks and if the UB Students for Life group would be able to meet with him. The President’s office sent the UB President to the Office of Student Life and Services instead. When the group contacted the VP of Student Life and Services, he sent his condolences and directed the students to meet with the UB International and Diversity Center on campus. (more…)
