Students for Life Thanks #ProLifeWalkout Participants
Students for Life of America Thanks Students and Groups for Successful Walkout, as “You may never know the lives you’ve touched when you stood up, in love, for life”
More than 400 students and student organizations contacted SFLA prior to the nationwide event
FREDERICKSBURG, VA (4-12-18)–In response to a successful National Pro-Life Walkout, Students for Life of America president Kristan Hawkins thanked students in the many schools who participated nationwide and released the following statement, “Across the country, pro-life students and groups stood up for the 321,384 babies killed by Planned Parenthood every year, against the violence of abortion, and in support of pregnant and parenting students. In pictures worth millions of words, we saw students walking out, praying, and chalking pro-life messages to bring attention to the fact that one-fourth of our generation has been snuffed out of existence because of legalized abortion. While students did not need to register with Students for Life for this student-driven event, more than 400 students and student organizations contacted us for support and tools.”
She continued: “It’s unfortunate that the media did not attempt to fairly portray the #ProLifeWalkout, given the fact that this generation is directly targeted by Planned Parenthood and their abortion industry allies for our business. No one is surprised that media bias is so obvious when it comes to abortion. People who are passionate about the life issue, about mothers and their preborn infants, know that the media doesn’t like to cover this human rights atrocity. It’s especially obvious every year during the anniversary of the Roe and Doe decisions and the March for Life.
“But it’s still worth noting that the media went all in for the anti-gun walkout, talking about lives lost and free speech, while ignoring the #ProLifeWalkout, in which we mourn the fact that Planned Parenthood and their co-workers in the abortion industry have taken one-fourth of our generation from us, and that students have a right to speak about that as well. Given the talking points the media used for the anti-gun walkout, it makes their bias and hypocrisy on the life issue all the more obvious.
“Still, what we at Students for Life of America have learned, working on more than 1,200 college and high school campuses, is that you may never know all of the lives you’ve touched when standing up, in love, for life.”
Analysis from Media Research Centers’ Katie Yoder showed “the three broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) never once mentioned the national pro-life walkout during their news shows on the night of the event, April 11. In contrast, the same evening shows devoted more than 10 minutes to the gun walkout the day it happened.” To read that report, click here.
Hawkins added that one student’s courage sparked Wednesday’s event, “I also want to thank Brandon Gillespie at Rocklin High School for inspiring this national walkout and for not letting his school intimidate him out of hosting his walkout. The tremendous, truly grassroots interest we have seen in the walkout is further proof that the Pro-Life Generation is the majority and is strong and growing.”
Because Gillespie’s school did not give his walkout the same accommodation, Attorneys from Life Legal Defense Foundation have contacted the school to outline the rights of Gillespie and other pro-life students. Read more here.
Life Legal Executive Director Alexandra Snyder said, “This is a blatant case of content discrimination and arbitrary favoritism. Rocklin High School’s decision treats the Pro-life Walkout differently than the way the school treated the gun walkout, which violates the First Amendment and the Equal Protection rights of every student participating in the Pro-life walkout. Life Legal is proud to fight for Brandon Gillespie’s rights to be treated the same as other students and to speak up for the nearly one quarter of his generation that will die from the scourge of abortion
Other students who experienced discrimination for their #prolifewalkout will also be offered the same support. Students for Life of America has already received several reports of schools treating the pro-life walkout differently than the anti-gun walkout, including being threatened with punishment. Students for Life of America along with Life Legal Defense Foundation will be pursuing all free-speech issues and ensuring that every profile student has their right to free speech protected.
