After ten months of waiting for official approval from the University of Buffalo (UB) Student Association, UB Students for Life is now an officially recognized group on campus. The UB Students for Life group applied for recognition in May of 2010, but was not granted official group status until the Alliance Defense Fund was notified. Once advised of the violation of the group’s First Amendment rights, ADF quickly sent a letter asking the Student Association to immediately recognize the group or provide a legitimate reason for why recognition was being withheld. The day the UB Student Association received a letter from the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) (March 21st), the UB Students for Life group received recognition.
Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life of America, commented,“Waiting ten months for recognition from a university’s student association is outrageous. Students have a right to freedom of speech on campus and silencing them by not approving their group violates their First Amendment rights. Students at the University of Buffalo are now able to fully execute their right of freedom of speech and fully educate their peers on the truth about abortion.”
The UB Students for Life group has been very active on campus despite their lack of recognition. This semester they hosted an abortion debate on campus and a post-abortion testimonial presentation, along with having consistent group meetings.
