Students For Life Clubs in Northern California are quickly picking up on the benefits of being a little controversial. Project Truth, a graphic humanities display visited Cosumnes River College the first week in March and jump started the seedling pro-life student group there. As I travel from campus to campus the group have issues in a few major areas.
- How do we find an advisor willing to represent us on campus?
- How do we brake through the apathy on campus?
- How do we get students to sign up?
Bringing on a display like Project Truth is great technique to address all three of these issues relatively easily.
Within a hour of being on campus a staff member came up to us and offered her support. She even offered to be an advisor for the club, something the group had been hoping to find for a few weeks. By stepping out as Students, the staff will follow in your example. You are an encouragement to the Pro-life teachers on campus.
The display does a great job at breaking through the campus apathy, something about seeing the reality of abortion makes it real. It’s no longer and abstract discussion. You will find Pro-aborts debating you, let them cause a scene. Speak the truth in love and be concerned about winning hearts not debates. Many times you aren’t speaking directly to the audience your reaching. Converts will come from the sidelines, those who see your passion and clarity on the issue.
Using the display as a draw, funnel them into your club. Pro-life students willing to come out to a display like Project Truth are going to be your club all stars, your top tier activists. People passionate against the injustice. It’s your time capitalize, students will be coming to you to learn how they can help, take names, emails and phone numbers.
Before you know it you’ll be leading one of the largest groups on campus.
