Vanderbilt University changed its nurse residency application so that it no longer requires applicants to pledge that they will assist in performing abortions. The University made the announcement in an e-mail to applicants today after the Alliance Defense Fund filed a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services.
Upon receiving the news, Kristan Hawkins, Executive Director of Students for Life of America, commented, “The fact that Vanderbilt University was screening pro-life applicants is illegal and unbelievable. Pro-life students should not be discriminated against. The change in their policy is a first step in reaching out to pro-life students and creating an acceptable learning environment for them.”
Dominique Monlezun, National Coordinator for Medical Students for Life, also shared similar thoughts, “After talking with the students who filed the case with ADF, I am very happy that the University has changed its policies. Medical schools and pro-life nursing schools should not be putting their students in a position where they have to choose between abortion and their education. This is a big step for pro-life health care professionals.”
